DVD REVIEW
Hans Leygraf
Fundamental Piano Lessons
Finkernagel & Lück production
This is an extremely detailed twin set of DVDs from one of the world's leading pedagogues. They total five hours of playing time, in which Leygraf patiently, clearly and logically outlines his extremely sensible and practical approach to technique. The first disc is concerned with basic fundamentals and mechanics, whilst in the second students are seen developing their own preferences whilst still remaining totally aware of piano touch at all times. It was fascinating to see two contrasted approaches from students studying the same piece (Bach's C minor French Suite). The development towards individuality and creative practice is certainly inspiring to behold, particularly when one continues to hear horror stores about so many pedagogues who continue to ignore the specific personal preferences of young pianists entrusted to their care.
Whereas books can often be confusing on this subject- simply because demonstrations will always be so much better than descriptions - the fact that on DVD we can immediately see arm weight in action, to give but one example, makes comprehension so much quicker and easier. Indeed, Leygraf's class of students at the Salzburg Mozarteum is on hand throughout to demonstrate techniques. After an initial introduction on posture as a means to good practice, lucid explanations of arm weight, relaxation with co-ordination, key contact, articulation, velocity, balance between melody and accompaniment and so on are logically presented. Repertoire covered includes Chopin (C minor Prelude, F minor Nocturne, etc), Bach (2 Part Inventions and C minor French Suite) as well as Schubert's sixth Moment Musical in A flat. This latter provides a climax to the course, with Leygraf himself demonstrating how he firstly analyses the piece, reading the score in the manner of a conductor- away from the instrument- before practising out loud. The leisurely, repetitive and clear approach that these DVD's adopt may not be sensational, glamorous or charismatic, but I feel they are better because of that. I can think of no other DVD package for piano technique which is so useful for serious piano students and their teachers- provided they are as patient and dedicated to the art of piano playing as Leygraf unquestionably is. Strongly recommended.
